Can You Mix MCBs?

Why are MCBs Preferred to Fuses?

ELCBs (earth-leaking circuit breakers) use earthing as their primary method of controlling electrical current and preventing electrocution. They work by detecting any stray voltage on the enclosure of a device and then breaking the circuit if it exceeds a designated level. They perform a similar function to RCDs, but the latter detect stray voltage directly and so are now more favoured by electricians.

Residual current devices (RCDs) are a different form of electrical safety equipment. While MCBs have a general function, RCDs are specifically built to protect against the frequently fatal risk of electrocution from touching exposed wires or incorrectly earthed cables. RCDs are also available in various types &#; types A, B, C, D, K, and Z. In the United States and Canada, they are known as ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs).

1. The number of poles for a circuit breaker should be determined based on the number of lines that need protection. For instance, in a typical residential single-phase electrical system, which consists of one neutral wire and one live wire forming a circuit, a two-pole breaker is chosen if both wires require protection. However, if the neutral wire does not need protection, a one-pole breaker can be selected.
2. The amperage rating of the circuit breaker should be based on the load of the circuit. For example, if the circuit&#;s carrying capacity is 20A and the rated operating current of the appliances is 10A, then the breaker&#;s amperage should be greater than 10A but less than 20A.
3. Determine the rated voltage, which for household electricity in China is typically 220V/230V for single-phase and 380V/400V for three-phase.
4. The type of instantaneous protection should be identified based on the resistance type of the appliances in the circuit. There are three types of instantaneous protection, corresponding to current protection multiples of B: 3~5In, C: 5~10In, and D: 10~14In (where In is the rated current). For simple incandescent lights, B-type protection may suffice, general appliances can be protected with C-type, and air conditioning units may require D-type protection.
