Spectrum Analyzer RBW vs VBW

I recently bought a Rigol DSA 815 spectrum analyzer.  So far, I am getting along with it just fine.  One thing I am just not clear on, however, is the difference between Resolution Band Width (RBW) and Video Band Width (VBW).  I understand the concept of RBW - it is the 'window' that you are looking through at any given time during the course of the sweep. A smaller RBW means seeing more detail in the trace at a cost of more time to do so.  This is not a problem for steady-state signals, but can be problematic for quickly changing signals.  Please let me know if I am confused here...

So what does VBW really mean?  The SA by default keeps the RBW and VBW the same, but if I unlink and set them differently, it seems like VBW applies some kind of averaging, but maybe not over as many samples as video averaging.  Just guessing now...  Any help understanding this would be much appreciated!

Thanks & 73,
Len, KD0RC
