Applications and Characteristics of Suspension Insulators

Suspension insulators are widely used in the insulation and mechanical fixation of high-voltage overhead transmission lines. Suspension insulators can be divided into disc-shaped suspension insulators and rod-shaped suspension insulators. Disk suspension insulator is the most widely used insulator for transmission lines. Rod-shaped suspension insulators have been widely used in Germany and other countries.

Applications and Characteristics of Suspension Insulators

Suspension insulators are widely used in the insulation and mechanical fixation of high-voltage overhead transmission lines. Suspension insulators consist of a number of porcelain discs connected in a string through metal links. The conductors are carried by the bottommost insulator, while the top insulator is fixed to the cross-arm of the tower. A single insulator porcelain disk can be applied to low-voltage lines, while multiple insulator porcelain disks connected in series can be applied to higher voltages. For example, six 11kv insulator porcelain disks connected in series can be used in 66kv transmission and distribution lines. 

Advantages of suspension insulators:

1) Each suspension disc is designed with a rated voltage of 11KV (higher rated voltage is 15KV), so by using different numbers of discs, the suspension string can be made suitable for any voltage level.

2) When any disk insulator in the suspension insulator string is damaged, maintenance workers can quickly replace the damaged insulator.

3) Since the lines are suspended on flexible suspension insulator strings, the mechanical stress on the suspension insulators is smaller.

4) Since the current-carrying conductor is carried by the bottommost insulator, the height of the conductor location is always less than the total height of the supporting structure. Therefore, the conductor is safer.

 

Disadvantages of suspension insulators:

1) Suspension insulator strings are more expensive than pin and post insulators.

2) Compared with pin insulators or post insulators, suspension insulator strings require higher support space to maintain the ground clearance of the current conductor.

3) The free swing range of the conductors in the suspension insulator system is large, so a large spacing should be left between the conductors.
