The road beneath your wheels is an ever-changing terrain, demanding a suspension system that can seamlessly adapt to the twists and turns of your journey. From bumpy off-road trails to smooth city streets, the right suspension can make all the difference in your driving experience. Join us as we embark on a captivating exploration of the diverse types of suspension systems, each designed to cater to specific driving needs, ensuring a smooth and comfortable ride for every car enthusiast.

Conventional Coil Spring Suspension

The conventional coil spring suspension system is still widely used in many vehicles due to its reliability and cost-effectiveness. The system comprises coil springs and shock absorbers that work together to absorb shocks and vibrations, providing a comfortable and stable ride for everyday driving. Its simplicity and durability make it a popular choice for a wide range of vehicles, from compact cars to SUVs.

Air Suspension System

Equipped with air-filled rubber bags or air springs, the air suspension system offers unparalleled adjustability and comfort. With the ability to control the vehicle's ride height and stiffness, this system ensures a smooth and stable ride even on uneven terrains. Its capability to automatically adjust to varying loads and road conditions makes it a preferred choice for luxury cars and SUVs, providing a plush and luxurious driving experience.

Adaptive Damping Suspension

The adaptive damping suspension system, also known as the electronic or active suspension system, employs electronic sensors and dampers to adjust the vehicle's damping characteristics in real time. By continuously monitoring road conditions and driver inputs, this system can swiftly adapt to provide optimal handling and comfort. Offering enhanced stability and improved handling, the adaptive damping suspension is a popular choice for sports cars and performance-oriented vehicles.

Leaf Spring Suspension

Trucks and commercial vehicles usually have a special kind of suspension system called leaf springs. This system uses flexible steel strips to absorb shocks and provide support for heavy loads. It's really strong and durable and can handle a lot of weight without any problems. That's why it's a great choice for vehicles that need to carry heavy cargo or haul trailers.

Multi-Link Suspension

The multi-link suspension system, renowned for its intricate design and superior handling, employs multiple arms and links to control wheel movement. By separating the roles of wheel control and suspension, this system offers improved handling, enhanced traction, and reduced body roll. Widely utilized in high-performance sports cars and luxury vehicles, the multi-link suspension system ensures a balanced blend of comfort and precise handling.

I don't know if it's any lower vs the fixed suspension, but I can tell you there is a very noticeable difference in ride comfort between Sport and Comfort (without any handling sacrifice). I've set up my Individual drive mode to have everything (steering, engine, transmission) in Sport with only Suspension set to Comfort. I feel like it's the absolute perfect set up for me.

If I'm ever out for a spirited drive on smoother roads I pop it into Sport Plus. Even then the suspension isn't jarring by any means, it's just not something I want to live with on my daily commute to work.

I'll never buy another car without an adaptive suspension setup. That and a heads up display are my new must haves with any potential new purchase.
