Why Smart Boards Can't Replace Teachers

Smart boards are extensively beneficial in classrooms due to its interactive and engaging design. They appeal to all age-groups as it allows students to draw, write and play, using touch, on its surface. Visual aids like pictures and videos, incorporate compact information which students can retain for a longer duration. While smart boards make learning experience enriching and fun, they can’t supersede a teacher in a classroom set up. The role and responsibilities of a teacher go beyond simply providing information and can thus not be replaced.

The Emotional Connect

Children possess an ardent desire to be appreciated and accepted for the work they do. Appreciation in the form of occasional rewards can motivate a child to improve and develop desirable habits. As motivators, teachers nurture a child’s curiosity from a young age and ensure that their exploration desires never fade away. The connection formed between a teacher and a student cannot be replicated by technology in any form. Even when a child is asked to solve a problem on a smart board, s/he seeks out the teacher and looks forward to their acceptance.

While smart boards provide information and encourage cognitive development, a teacher provides emotional support. Reinforcement of a child’s behavior through verbal or non-verbal praise leads to the development of their self-image and self-esteem. Erikson (1963), a German-American developmental psychologist, believes that personality is a product of positive and negative outcomes that result from interaction with the social environment. He states that a child’s thirst for knowledge will make them question everything around them. A teacher who encourages the child’s curiosity and helps them seek answers assists them in finding purpose and being assertive about themselves. Smart boards cannot reward students or praise them and thus do not help build character.

The Problem of Information Overload

The benefit of smart boards to provide access to an unlimited database of information is often wasted without the aid of a teacher who is responsible for filtering relevant information for the class. Theodore Roszak (1986), an American academic, emphasized that an excess of information can distract a young mind from useful information which gets lost among the shapeless heaps of data. Teachers sift through the information to suit the class and provide them with age-appropriate information. They also bring in their past experiences to adopt teaching methods that cater to every child’s need.

A combination of both, teachers aided by technology like smart boards, creates an essential learning environment for the educational development of a child. Such an environment will encourage the child to stay focused in class and provide emotional assistance when required. When technology and teachers work on each others limitation, they benefit the classroom by imparting quality education.
