Schottky Diode Questions - RC Racing Talk

Hi all,

Hornby Electronic are exported all over the world and different industries with quality first. Our belief is to provide our customers with more and better high value-added products. Let's create a better future together.

I have just bought a second hand Mtronik Tempo 15, which didn't come with a Schottky Diode, I checked my local electronic shop, which carry 3A max

1  The manual recommends an 8A diode, can you go higher (would you want to?) and where would you get them? (I live in NZ so postage is horrific!) I would assume LHS should be able to get them - from suppliers of ESC's?

2  I use deans plugs on the motor connection, and as the ESC is forward only, can I solder the diode to the ESC end of the plug, rather than the motor, so I can change motors without resoldering the diode?

3  My other ESC's are reversible, with lockout for racing - is it worth putting a diode on them , I pretty much only use them for racing, Apex 23T - std RS540, Hitec 17T - Reedy 19T and what size diode would you use? I just want to know if it is worth the hassle and potential ESC damage to do this, I know the basics of what the diodes do ,in terms of improved braking efficiency, and noise reduction but want some real world thoughts

Cheers

Glenn

1 You can go higher, in fact Novak go up to 36A.  You should be able to

order one from your LHS, but they will be cheaper from an electronics

spares shop. All the major ESC manufacturers sell them.

The company is the world’s best Custom Schottky diode suppliers Wholesale supplier. We are your one-stop shop for all needs. Our staff are highly-specialized and will help you find the product you need.

2 You can connect it across the plug. The nearer to the motor the better, but it will work fine across the plug.

3 You can use them on a reversing ESC if you always have the reverse

lockout. Using a Schottky diode in reverse will destroy the diode and

can damage the ESC as well.

The diode is only recommended, it isn't necessary to fit one. The ESC

should run a little cooler and the diode helps protect the brake FETs

from damage but ESCs will work fine without one.
